The Good Dirt

No purchase gets me more excited than buying a good bag of dirt. The bag of dirt purchased in March reveals how little has been planted because it’s half full.

A new garden center opened at the opposite end of the same street as Hill Country. You can read here that Hill Country is by far my favorite garden center and where we recently purchased the water bowl, so I felt a need to check out the new one to see if they’re any competition. Stepping into the oversized greenhouse I knew instantly that Hill Country had nothing to worry about. It was a suitable place to purchase plants, but it didn’t offer anywhere near the experience.

I was making my way toward the exit when I noticed a pot of mixed flowers, overwatered and dying. I sat it on the checkout counter and found it to be on sale due to their grand opening, so it was $25. My daughter thought it was awful when I told the cashier, “I’m taking it home so it’ll live”, but the cashier agreed.

I sat it in the hanger purchased last year and kept it watered, but it didn’t seem happy in it’s original pot, so I took it to my gardening bench and dumped it out. It was planted in cheap dirt! Grabbing my bag of potting soil by Happy Frog, I placed the flowering plants in a little larger pot, staying mindful that it still needed to fit inside the hanger. I have no idea what all was planted in the original pot but the next day it offered a new bloom, in gratitude for the good dirt.

A tiny, yellow, bloom.

I’m teaching my neighbor about dirt. She’d dig a hole, plop the plant in and cover it with the same dirt. I was surprised and she gave me an odd look regarding how much I’ll spend on a good bag of dirt. The success of the plant is in the quality of dirt. If you’re looking to grow and feel as if you’re sitting in dirt…make sure it’s the good dirt.

I was trying to picture a child’s face (grown or otherwise) as a parent said, “I’m taking it home so it’ll live,” and I couldn’t stop laughing. I’m very direct as well, and my son just can’t handle it. I am in awe of you, Ms. Barb! 💫😂💫

  3. I’m with you on good dirt! I like Happy Frog too. I am hesitant to say how much dirt I’ve purchased for my raised beds melon experiment. I could have bought some bulk a lot cheaper but I just wasn’t sure what was actually in it. Lots of corporate farming out here with lots of chemicals. I settled on the lower half of the bed with a manure compost and the top half with Kellogg’s organic raised bed compost/soil and added play sand to keep it all loose. Lots of work, but next year I hope to just refresh with a top layer of Kellogg’s, dirt not the cereal company! Okay, I through talking dirty. Great post. ( Geesh, I am darn right chatty tonight.)

    1. Dear Lord! I can only imagine how much you spent filling raised beds!!! It’s so important though, especially growing melons. The quality of the dirt goes into what you’ll eat. It sounds like you did great and now that you have put in the work for a solid foundation, a top dressing is all you’ll need.

We used to have raised beds and we made one end of it all sand for the kids to play in while we tended the garden. It was helpful if it accidently got mixed in with the dirt and it got them interested in the gardening. Hahaha…I’m sure we could talk dirt for hours, but thanks so much for stopping by. Always good to hear from you.
