The Crunchy Season

A friend in the neighborhood has been traveling over the summer, so I’ve been keeping her flowers watered while she’s away. She mentioned looking out the widow of the airplane while landing in Texas and everything looked dead. What she was seeing is fondly referred to as the crunchy season.

I was walking home one morning from her house and heard water. There was a house with a small patch of grass in their front yard that had a circular shaped sprinkler watering it. (Me-staring at the sprinkler and snapping a photo.) You see, I don’t have a lawn of grass and don’t want to maintain grass, but I do have a yard containing this one weed. It usually dies back and becomes a part of the crunchy season, but this year I didn’t wish to participate in that season.

I found the sprinkler online and ordered it to use in my yard and that’s when the magic began to happen. The weed came back to life and started growing to cover the ground in a rich, green carpet. This got me thinking…

I researched durable ground covers and have a few ideas for fall planting season. If you’re going to have a yard of weeds, you might as well plant the ones you want. The little sprinkler’s spray reminds me of a fountain and covers a small area perfectly. You can adjust the strength of the spray with the switch on the neck. The one issue was the little bit of grass in the yard also started coming back to life, so I pull the sprigs of grass out as they pop up.

That is backward thinking because most people pull the weeds for the health of the grass, but I’m discarding the grass to let the weed grow. It doesn’t take much to bring this weed to life, so the sprinkler is used periodically and some days I use the watering wand written about here.

It’s like taking care of what we’ve been given, and I’d much rather see this weed alive than partake in the crunchy season.

  1. The crunchy season is so depressing – we had that here for a while, as well. A beautiful ground cover with purple flowers is Purple Dragon – https://www.monrovia.com/purple-dragon-dead-nettle.html. As a bonus for us – tho not you – deer don’t like it!! Enjoy your “lawn”!

    1. It’s sad, but we usually have the power to change it, or shift our thinking. I’m grateful we have no deer in this neighborhood. The next town over has deer standing in front yards like they live there. 😂 Thank you, my friend. 💜
