That One Thing

You reach a certain age and realize you’ve lived more years than you probably have left, so I’ve been pondering topics such as, purpose, passion, meaningful work and fulfilling relationships, while continually seeking God with, ‘what’s next?’

The other night I sat down and listened to a workshop recording with Joshua Becker and took some notes. We hosted this workshop in Fearless Living Academy and Joshua was encouraging viewers to live a life of no regrets. Joshua shared that regrets are like driving a car and spending the majority of time looking in the rearview mirror instead of the road ahead. Imagine the catastrophe if every driver on the road focused on the rearview mirror more than the windshield.

Another topic I’m focused on this year is ‘finishing’. I want to be a good finisher. There’s no problem with starting something new because that’s exciting, but that feeling is temporal. When the thrill wears off, the project is left sitting unfinished, so I’ve been asking myself, “What is the one thing you’d regret not finishing?” The best I can surmise to arrive at the end of our lives with no regrets is to choose one thing we’d regret not finishing and stick with it to completion.

For you, my lovely, what is that one thing?

  1. well truth be told there are many unfinished projects here. The tiny front closet door that I was going to paint bright aqua with white clouds. The inside of that tiny closet that I was going to put a beautiful tile floor and paint light blue. I have the beautiful glass tile for the floor. I have the paint. I have taken the door off the hinges of the closet. But that’s as far as I got. I also haven’t finished putting the new trim and quarter round on after finishing laying the flooring in the kitchen and hallway. OK one more. I cut down a lot of brush this past winter and a huge brush pile awaits. It needs to be taken care of by burning or taking to the slash pit at the dump. I don’t think I’m gonna touch that until fall. And then there’s the book I wrote that I haven’t presented to a publisher yet. I guess I’m gonna be busy huh? ;-) This doesn’t consider all the ideas. I have bubbling in my head for new projects!

    1. Hello Patty and thank you so much for sharing! You’re a creative, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that you have unfinished projects. The little closet sounds beautiful, especially glass tiles on the floor waiting to be painted. I’d love to see photos of it once it’s complete.

Out of everything you shared, what is the one thing you’d regret not finishing before leaving this earth? To leave your mark with something that would live on without you. I don’t see that being trim molding, but I do see it as a book. What is holding you back my lovely from getting the book published?

      1. the book will be revisited when the energy for it returns. Im grieving the loss of my mother and there is no energy or desire for much at the moment. She passed June 2nd. But I promise to give the book its due.

  2. I’m pretty good at finishing what I start, it’s procrastinating at getting started that I get caught up on. I always look forward to your letters! ❤️

    1. Hello lovely and I can see that in you! Do you think it’s something you learned over the years from your careers, or is it simply a part of you? It’s a blessing to be a good finisher and if we could bottle it and sell it, we’d make a fortune. 😍 Thank you my friend and you’re familiar with the man being highlighted. 💖

  3. Not getting this one particular picture book on my desk into print. But that’s also a regret I will not allow myself to ever worry about!

Thanks for the little thought-nudge. :-)

  4. I look forward to it! Soon I will write, bu right now, I’m trying to catch up on so much time and sleep (and cleaning!) lost in caring for Jazzy. Re-finding some of the things that fell by the wayside over the last 9+ months. It’s an interesting period. Mwah! ❤️

  5. I have nothing that is unfinished. If I start something, then I like to finish it.
The only trouble I have is sometimes starting something.

    1. That’s great, Liz and I get that the starting point is hard to find. Maybe because we know once we start, we’ll want to finish? The issue I run into is starting and not sure how long it’s going to take to finish. If it’s taking a long time, I get discouraged and can easily drop my focus halfway through. All I can do is stay steady and consistent until the finish is within sight. 🙏
