I wonder if the birds are continually confused by my yard, or if they see it as a great adventure? This morning, I noted, “I enjoy rearranging things outside as much as inside”, but once you move a birdbath, it takes days for them trust the new location. The hummingbirds are as quick witted as their wings. The Shrimp Plant was moved from the bottom of the yard to the top, but they found it within minutes.
I don’t invest a large amount of money on a new idea at first, but I want to see more items filled with water in my backyard, especially during the summer. Starting small, I found a solar powered birdbath on sale at Walmart for $25 and spent some time modifying it to my liking. The reviews stated that it shoots a tall stream of water into the air causing the water in the bowl to empty quickly and the review was true.
Barb isn’t gonna continually refill a bowl of water, so…
I removed the fountain spray head, but left the extension rod in place to create a bubbling fountain. Also included were four short straws to attach to the base of the fountain to help hold it in the middle of the bowl. I decided to live dangerously and removed those to let the fountain float around freely. This inexpensive little fountain offers up a morning appointment by the window.

While washing dishes, this little bird arrives to perch on the edge of the bowl, surveying the fountain to plan a landing. Then, he musters up the courage to hop onto the platform and float around the bowl while bathing. My thumb is larger than this baby bird, but it’s complete entertain to watch as his feathers go from dry to soaking wet.
Mama used to say, “That’s for the birds”, but it meant unimportant, or not worth considering. Today that phrase has new meaning for me, because as you can see, this backyard is slowly becoming a playground for the birds.
