Give It Time

Another female Cardinal has chosen the wrought iron hanger to build her nest. The Asparagus Fern is still sitting in the hanger, even though I thought about replacing it with something that blooms. I stepped outside with the doggos to investigate further.

This week, I noticed the fern jiggling while standing at the kitchen window, but couldn’t tell if she was building it inside the pot of the fern, or in between the pot and wrought iron hanger like the previous Cardinal. Leaving the deck to stand underneath the wrought iron hanger I saw the beginnings of a nest just like before and smiled.

Returning to the deck, the doggos joined me to stand there in a moment of silence before heading back inside. I retrieved the disco ball nearby because they were calling for more rain today and turned toward the backdoor. Pushing it open, Winnie ran inside and then Denver followed alongside me, but as soon as the door swung shut, there was a clap of thunder and the rain started to pour. I was in awe of that moment.

It was like standing in divine timing and it wasn’t anything I did, or planned to happen…I was just following my curiosity though the morning that was already planned.

Lastnight I was walking through the house barefoot and slammed my foot into the leg of a chair. The wooden chair leg went between my pinky toe and the toe beside it, but the chair didn’t move. Afterwards I thought of my blogging friend, Mags, because something similar happened to her recently, so this morning I’m not walking at a normal pace and every time I step with that foot there’s pain to remind me of the injury.

This isn’t the first time this has happened by any means, but what I remember most about all of the previous times is it wasn’t urgent. Each time the toe healed by being gentle with it and allowing time for the swelling to go down. It will feel better in a few days and after about a week it will become a distant memory as if it didn’t happen at all.

I already move through life at an intentional pace, but I imagine God using this injury to slow me down even more this week. The rain is soft, yet steady and there’s meditative music coming from the Bluetooth speaker sitting on top of the fridge. The glow of one lamp lit to see what’s being written, but other rooms are being bathed in natural light despite rain on the other side of each window. Steady your gaze and let it find you instead of looking for it.

This morning I was writing my morning page and two sentences fell to the bottom of the page. There was just enough room for them to complete the page, but it reminded me by seeing the fern wiggling I knew what was happening because it had happened before. I was pondering this nest being built, when these words poured through the pen, “We shall see. Some of the sweetest moments aren’t visible until they’re ready to be seen.”

The toe will heal without me and the nest will form with zero input from me. There’s many an instance in our daily lives, my lovelies, that the only requirement is to give it time.

  1. It looks like that will become a regular nesting place from now on. New life to see each time. Beautiful.

  2. ”Give it time”—thank you. It’s a grand how time performs, heals and gently suggests “no thank you, you rest.”

    1. Hello lovely and yes, it is grand. I’m grateful God only gave us a certain amount of hours each day, so we’d know when to stop. Even to slow the pace…there’s rest in that. 💖

  3. Aren’t toe dunts the worst thing? Second only to stepping on a Lego piece!!!! I haven’t read from you for a while, nice to see :)

    1. Hi Brian and it’s good to see you again! They are so inconvenient and painful. It’s really made me realize how much I depend on all 5 toes working properly to walk with ease. 😊

  4. Good morning, dear Barb. I am happy to hear that you have a beautiful cardinal nesting in the fern pot again. That was sure perfect timing for you, Winnie and Denver to get inside a second before the thunder struck and rain fell. What are we to do about our toes. I have sore toes on both feet and one foot is blue on the top from the last time I accidently kicked the leg of a stool. I wore my shoes yesterday but it hurts to wear them. I hope our toesies heal quickly and we can avoid all those things that get in our way. 😊❤️

    1. Hello Mags and thank you for sharing. The nest is definitely a marvelous surprise and I can’t get over that timing. You are not alone in this my lovely. The top of my foot is blue too, but I’m wearing sandals. Here’s to a speedy recovery and watching where we walk. 💕

      1. I had not thought of wearing sandals…I need to do that. I am sorry your foot is blue too. ❤️

        1. Oh yes…much better than sliding into a snug fitting shoe. Give it a try, Mags and thank you. May you feel better soon! 💖

  5. I think one of the hardest disciplines to learn is that not everything God is doing requires my participation. Some things He invites me to join; other things He simply invites me to trust. My natural instinct is to “help”—to peek, adjust, hurry, improve, or at least check on the progress every fifteen minutes.

Yet Scripture says, “He that believeth shall not make haste” (Isaiah 28:16). I’ve often thought that’s an interesting way to describe faith. Perhaps faith isn’t only moving when God says “Go.” Sometimes it’s quietly resisting the urge to interfere while He says, “Watch what I can do without your fingerprints all over it.”

There’s a beautiful humility in discovering that God’s timing doesn’t improve because I worry about it. It simply unfolds… and when it does, I usually realize He was accomplishing far more in the waiting than I ever could have managed by rushing.

    1. Hi Kimberly and this reminds me of something I heard recently when this guy proclaimed he stopped working for God. He was always running out ahead of God, or trying to help, but you are so right…His timing doesn’t improve with our help. Thank you, as always, for a beautiful share. 💖
