This morning, I watched the sunrise out the window of my writing room. I never knew my daughter’s old room had the best view of the sunrise until now and it was a magical sight. There are some plants in here preparing for a winter bloom.
I don’t have much use for house plants, but if a plant has a bloom in store I’ll give them everything they need which isn’t a lot for these winter bloomers. A warm place to sit with adequate light and a weekly watering is about all. I have a healthy obsession with the Amaryllis and purchased a bulb to bloom during the holidays. It’s a double-bloom almost ready to open, so like the sunrise catching me by surprise, I’ll stroll in here one morning soon to see the Amaryllis in bloom. You can feel the anticipation in this room of the winter bloom.

There’s a Thanksgiving cactus that has already bloomed once, but looking at it closely I noticed it’s preparing to bloom again. Maybe it wants to bloom more than once and be a Christmas cactus as well. Over the weekend I purchased the most pitiful looking Christmas cactus ever for $3.00, just to bring it home to offer it a better life. It’s been over watered, so will be repotted later today, but even sitting in it’s soggy state, it knows it’s time to bloom. He’s a tenacious little guy.

The Poinsettia is a staple this time of year and even though my father grew them from seed, I’ve struggled to keep them alive. When I saw this one infused with watercolor and glitter it begged to come home with me, but plants have strengthened my patience, so it has a good chance of living.

I’ve surmised it’s not working in the yard that brings me joy, but it’s awaiting the bloom. This room is hugely rewarding, much more so than working outside in the heat of the summer. These plants don’t ask very much from me, but to simply sit and enjoy a season of being surrounded by the Winter bloom.
