The Long Stop

Last week, I began seeing a new therapist. The one I started seeing last June, became more of a friend than a guide, which is okay, but once that line is crossed, a change is good.

I’m pretty sure my new therapist doesn’t know what to do with me yet. She sends me worksheets to complete, which I love, but they’re on gratitude and happiness, which is already a daily practice. I find myself combing through each worksheet to find a prompt, or idea I don’t already know and what I’ve learned so far is, even when we think we know it already, there’s more to learn, when we’re willing.

The posts entitled, ‘My Life is a Meme’, aren’t random. They typically describe what’s on my heart to share, or where I am in life. The one posted last week, is EXACTLY the season I’m in, but let me tell you lovely, doing less, or nearly nothing is hard work, so I reached out to a professional for help and at the end of our initial messaging she said, “I want you to enjoy what the Lord has in store for you during this season.”

So, I don’t have to ‘do’ anything, but enjoy the season. I believe God’s goodness is always present, but if we’re continually ‘doing’, it’s easily missed.

The other day I was standing at the backdoor gazing at all the flowers I’d nurtured to attract hummingbirds, but was slightly disappointed that I hadn’t seen one yet. Instead of stepping away, I stood still in hopes of seeing a hummingbird appear. They cannot resist the shrimp plant, so my gaze fell to the lower part of the yard to begin staring at the plant. That’s when I saw them darting in and out of the shrimp plant, getting their fill from each bloom, so the hummingbirds were already there…all I had to do was stop long enough to notice. The goodness is waiting to be seen in the long stop.

    1. Thank you, Mags! I stopped using hummingbird feeders after discovering what flowers attract them and they’re so interesting to watch. 🧡

    1. We’re so hardwired to constantly be in motion, but It seems at some point we need to simply enjoy where we are and the life that’s been given to us. It’s a process, but I’m willing to learn! 💝

  3. So true. Having the patience to wait long enough – which is often not long at all – so often works out! 🦋

    1. Right? It felt like a long time standing at the backdoor, but I imagine it was less than 2 minutes. Time seems more prevalent when there’s no distraction and you’re standing in it…waiting to see what’s in store. 🌻

  5. Your best blog entry yet! Deep and introspective. I too had a hummingbird event watering my garden. Some small voice in my head said…just wait a little bit longer. Shortly a hummingbird stopped and took several small dives/dips into the row I was watering. So precious! had I quickly moved to the next row, I’d have missed her! thanks again.

Great message. Elizabeth Barrett Browning says that poetry helps you do this too; it’s practice in stopping and focusing long enough to see that “every common bush is afire with God.”
