When Someday Arrives

It was years ago when I purchased the little planter with a face and before I had any houseplants. I loved it the moment I laid eyes on it in a local florist shoppe and knew it was made for a plant, but I used it as a kitchen tool caddy.

Recently, I rearranged the shelf in the kitchen where the planter sat and placed the utensils in a different container, but knew I’d never part with the face planter, so I sat it on the counter near the backdoor. Over the weekend, I no longer saw it as a kitchen caddy and knew how to use it as a planter!

It doesn’t have a drainage hole in the bottom, so that was one reason I used it for utensils. Back then, I didn’t know how to drill a hole in ceramic and even though I feel capable now, there’s no need. I knew there was a black, plastic pot in the gardening shed that would slip inside the planter. There are two stacks of them in the shed of various sizes. I save the pots the plants come in from the nursery to reuse them.

I found a black, plastic container with drainage holes that fit inside the planter, so I spread a handful of small rocks inside to cover the bottom. I gently removed the Pothos from the container it was in and trimmed the stringy roots. Scooping the dirt from it’s existing pot into the black plastic container it made a nice foundation of soil. Placing the Pothos inside the pot, I spread it’s roots and went to the shed for more potting soil.

I use a large, acrylic cup to scoop the dirt from the bag and pour it around the plant, pressing down as I make my way around until the pot is almost full. I soaked it good with water and sat it in the shade to drain before bringing it inside.

In the back, I mixed in a couple of sprigs of Wandering Jew. I can remove the plastic pot, sit it in the sink for a spray of water and it’s good to go! When I first saw this planter, I loved it, but at the time I couldn’t keep a plant alive. I knew that someday I would have houseplants, so this must be what it looks like when someday arrives.
