More Than a Haircut

I’m letting my hair grow and this began in March? I’m not precisely sure, but once the weather warmed, I just stopped getting it cut. I told my hairdresser this bright idea as she finished reshaping my short hair and she said, “Alright. I’ll see you in 2 months!”

It was one of the hard things I did this year and was blood awful in the beginning. I participate in Zoom calls almost daily with my work and over time people gave me strange looks like, “What’s happening with her hair?” When I walked the hood, my neighbors weren’t sure it was me at first because my hair was so out of shape. One neighbor stopped to chat and stared curiously at my hair during the entire conversation! Needless to say, it’s been awkward, but I was on a mission.

Fast forward six months and I went to see my hairdresser for a trim. She said, “I’m not cutting your hair…just trim!”, as she showed me whisps of hair between her fingers.

It was the shortest amount of time I’d ever sat in her chair, but we talked and laughed like we always do. We discuss our adult children as she continually tries matchmaking her niece with my son and she’s not sure my daughter is even real, but we have fun. We give each other propagated clippings of plants and the first thing she wanted me to see were the sprigs I gave her a couple of months ago. They had grown into a full-fledged plant and it was obvious that plant was in the right environment to thrive.

Realizing I won’t see her again until after the new year, we hug as she tells me if I need a place to land over the holidays to come to her house, but she knows I won’t.

Leaving her salon I yell, “I love you”, over my shoulder as stepping through the door and toward my truck. A breeze catches my hair and blows it all over my head which I’m still getting used to. Even though we don’t see each other as often as before, sitting in that chair is our moment of reconnection. This leads me to believe that my time there was about more than a haircut.

  1. Definitely! These Connections in our life are indeed precious. It’s interesting if your like me in my early days I either never noticed them nor put in the love to create them. Obviously not the case today. So … you know me …next post I want a pic😊

    1. I agree, Dwight! I probably won’t be able to go the rest of the year without stopping by to give her a hug. I thought about taking her a Christmas plant, but her salon is starting to resemble a tropical forest. 😂 As we mature so do our thoughts about what relationships look like.

Yeah…that’s the only negative to this experience is now I’ll need to update all my profile pics. My hair looks so different now, it takes some people a minute to recognize me on Zoom calls. It looks a lot like Bon Jovi, circa 1992, but I want to grow it a little bit longer before taking pics. Maybe you and I should be friends on Marco Polo so we can send short videos to one another of the goodness in our lives!

  2. I was wearing a shirt sharp deep black bob since my late teens. It’s was my signature and then all of a sudden last January I want blondish and let my hair grow.people still struggle yo recognise me. I love the change though. Age plays so many tricks on us.
As for your hairdresser keep her close, she a beautiful personal looks like. I personally like to have “ my hairdresser” rather than change, I tried but dudntvwork, and not because they were not good on the contrary may be better than my old one, but when I walk in “my “salon is a familiar environment where I’m at easy, I don’t feel judge. It’s trusty and warmth. It’s a built over years connection that makes it nice to go there rather than just a chore ( I don’t like goingbyo have my hair done)

    1. This is a beautiful testimony, Ortensia and thank you so much for sharing. I’ve tried different hairdressers as well, and it’s not the same experience after finding the one for you. One feels like a chore, while the other feels like going home. 💖
