The female Cardinal arrived at the same spot in front of the window and fluttered there in mid air looking for what was no longer there. I spent time recently repotting some plants and this hanging basket was one of them.
Instead of returning the hanging basket to it’s original spot in front of the window I hung it one hook over by the front door. It was early morning as I sat at my typewriter, pounding the keys when I noticed the bird in her state of perplexity. It didn’t take her long to see the hanging basket and fly over to rest her wings.
When I first saw the Cardinal doing this months ago, I thought she was building a nest, but during the repotting didn’t see any evidence of nesting. Maybe we really are creatures of habit because my daughter removed the clock from the kitchen wall over a month ago and I’m still looking at that same spot for the time. Even though the hanging basket wasn’t in the same spot, it was nearby, but I moved it back to the window. Life is unsure enough without me adding to it and like this Cardinal… we need a favored spot to land and rest our wings.
