82 degrees

I was sitting on a yoga mat in a studio during a sound bath when I first noticed it. The air wasn’t cold, or hot, it was like it was the same temperature as my skin, so I couldn’t even feel it surrounding me and it felt good.

As the outdoors started heating up this year, I tried being mindful while working in the yard and to come inside before overheating. As soon as I entered the house, it felt like walking into a freezer found in restaurant kitchens which was a shock to my senses. Living with my daughter, she liked the house to be cold, so we kept the thermostat set to 77℉, but living alone that was too cold, so I started playing around with the indoor temps.

This has been an interesting journey as we humans love our comfort levels. Personally, I think comfort can be overrated and am of the mindset, “If you’re comfortable in life, you’re probably sitting still.”

I began by increasing the thermostat one degree at a time and allowed my skin to become acclimated to the difference. Moving it from 78° to 80° with ease, but when I nudged it past 80℉ my flesh started having fits. It took more time to become acclimated to more than 80° as an indoor temp, but it finally stuck in August and 82° became my new normal. Now when I enter my home, the air doesn’t hit you like a block of ice. Instead, it welcomes you in.

A large part of this experiment came once I knew I had nothing to lose. The outdoor, central heating and air conditioning unit has been slowing dying for years, so I decided to go easy on it, in hopes of it not dying in mid-August. My landlord was aware and began having people come out to give estimates. He chose a company and they arrived at my home on Saturday morning. They worked fast and efficiently and continually promised to have cool air moving into the house shortly. I wasn’t bothered, the indoor temp was holding steady at 81°, so all was good.

Blessing the old unit as it permanently retires.

Once the new unit installation was complete, the man in charge asked me to turn it on and set it to 70° so it would get good and cold. I didn’t obey his wishes and set it to 80° instead, but when it reached 80°, it felt too cold, so I popped it back up to 82°. I want to test myself in a similar way this winter with the cold.

What temperature determines your comfort level? For now, mine seems to be 82 degrees.

  1. There’s no A/C in my old rental, so … my current situation is “the temperature it is, that’s the temperature you get to enjoy,” haha. Perhaps someday I’ll be able to answer your question with more specificity, but–not today!

And YES to what you wrote about challenge! Eleventy billion percent YES!!!

    1. Oh, and for clarity: By “challenge,” I meant as … the opposite of setting in and getting comfy!

      1. I see you Deborah and understood completely. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt truly ‘settled in’, but even during a challenge, there’s contentment to be found. As always, thank you for your lovely comments. 💖

    2. You must not live in Texas, Deborah. lol In some climates I’m sure it’s doable. Heck, we were raised in a home with no A/C, so we grew up thinking it was normal. After we all grew up and moved out, Mama had central heat and A/C installed. I never understood her timing on that, except maybe being done raising 4 kids, she finally had some money in her purse. I love your percentages. 😄

  2. I grew up without air conditioning, and a house heated w/ a wood furnace. (2 story farm house) and the temperature range (especially in the winter months) was quite a bit. You touched on it in your post. Attitude. I’ve noticed a change in even how the weather is reported. I remember when they started adding wind chill numbers and heat index numbers. (instead of just the actual temperature) so these days, I hear people in a complete panic about the 10 day forecasts..(too hot, or oh, my goodness, we’re going to get X amount of snow. Give me a break. I work outside 90% of my job as a carpenter. You dress for whatever, Unless I’m supposed to pour concrete, and rain would mess up my party, I rarely give the weather forecast a thought. When we were growing up, and the hay was ready to bale, we baled. End of story. Didn’t matter if the temps were in the upper 90’s or more. (since I’m in Iowa, we don’t get as hot as you in Texas) so upper 90’s in July and August is usually about as hot as it gets. There really is an attitude component to Weather, and temp, and comfort levels. I find it fascinating you’re good @ 80. I’m spoiled (or soft?) now, I like it right about 72. dM

    1. Hi DM and I appreciate you chiming in and leaving this here. We grew up in similar homes, except mine was one story with the furnace in the basement. In the summertime, there were box fans sitting inside the windows run on reverse during the day to suck the hot air out of the house and at night the fans were run properly to pull the cooler air inside. Mama had it all figured out. 😄

Oh dear Lord…I’ve written so much about the weather forecast and how it controls a lot of people’s lives, but haven’t posted any of it here. Maybe I will, but for me the weather is just as dramatic as the nightly news, which I stopped watching years ago. As if the weather isn’t scary enough nowadays the meteorologists try to make it even more so. Like you…I don’t give it much thought. I step outside to see what the weather is like and watch the sky for the real story. Thank you DM…I think living alone has an effect. If I had a house full of people I’d probably need to drop the thermostat down, but anything below 75 and I’m wearing a blanket! 😊

  3. I’m good at 80, but 82 with low humidity is also very do-able.
