I love flannel sheets in the winter, but this winter has been relatively mild which offers pros and cons. When we had our cold snap a couple of weeks ago, I took advantage of it and placed flannel sheets on my bed, but that feeling of coziness was short lived as the temperatures began to rise.
Over the weekend I decided to exchange the flannels for normal sheets and stripped them off the bed. Placing them inside the washer, it made sense to get them clean before storing them away for the year, but when they came out of the dryer, I faced my usual dilemma of folding the fitted sheet. In my perpetual singleness this has always been a struggle but began going through the rolodex of my mind to recall how its properly done and put the clean flannel sheets away.
Another minor struggle of mine is placing the new fitted sheet on the bed. I rarely get it right first try and have the long end on the short end of the mattress, so have to flip it around to start again. Taking one corner at a time it slides over the mattress and snaps firmly into place. That final corner takes more strength than the rest, but when it finally slips into place it offers accomplishment. Stepping back to admire the fitted sheet snugly in place, encompassing the mattress is rewarding.
Life is like a fitted sheet. If our start is off, we can go a unique way to find what fits. Once we’re on that divine path, each corner slips into place. We’ll get weary along the way and that last part takes all the strength we have left, but it’s worth it to be able step back and see how everything slid into place just like a fitted sheet.
