Moments Like These

I’ve been invited to join a church, so I went to a meeting to listen to the vision of the church and the direction they’re headed in. I haven’t been to a meeting like this in 20 years, but enjoyed it and we’ll see where it leads.

Like the meme we’ve talked about says, I’ve been trying to say ‘yes’ to God more. Since starting this practice all kinds of doors and windows have flung open. It’s exciting, but if I think about what’s being offered behind every door it can be overwhelming, so I try not to think about it. Last night, a friend texted me asking if I was okay because I’d been on her mind for a week. She felt that my life had shifted, and it continues to shift, which doesn’t make any sense, but that’s what happens when we stop thinking and start saying yes.

Each morning, I stand and gaze out the kitchen window waiting for the electric kettle to heat up. Sitting outside the window is a shrimp plant that was purchased one year ago and it’s one of my favorite plants. It’s also the plant that I was digging out of it’s planter in January to bring it inside for the winter. During the winter, I trimmed it back for it to rest, but sat it back outside about a month ago and it’s doubled in size. Here’s a photo I recently sent to a friend.

Every morning a hummingbird visits the flowering plant and I watch as it darts from flower to flower. What began as me standing there waiting for the kettle to heat has turned into a morning meeting with the hummingbird because it shows up too. A week later, I find myself looking forward to standing in front of the window and the hummingbird shows up every time. That’s what moments consist of and they happen with, or without us, but it’s up to us to show up.

No matter what falls into place from the opportunities offered, I know one thing for certain. I won’t allow any opportunity to invade my sacred mornings and miss out on moments like these.
