Pen to Paper

I was speaking with a colleague at work and after we had the business part resolved, he asked, “Are you still writing morning pages?”

I told him that I’m writing everyday, but had slacked off on the morning pages and he sighed. Oh, I have a box labeled, “Morning Pages 2024”, but at some point, I started typing them using my vintage typewriter instead of putting pen to paper. Pulling the box from it’s resting place, I raised the lid to ruffle through the pages for any sign of my handwriting and there was zero! There’s a stack of pages written from this year, but all were typed, which surprised me.

I woke up Saturday morning with the words of my colleague rolling through my mind and wondered why I had stopped handwriting the pages, but then realized I had also stopped handwriting letters. Most of them were typed, but I’ve been journaling almost every evening for months and that was handwritten, but journaling isn’t the same as morning pages. I found this beautiful video which eloquently explains the difference between the two.

I rolled out of bed and donned my writing robe and slippers to make my way to the studio. It was filled with early morning light with a stream of sunlight shining brightly on my writing table. I dusted off a box of parchment paper, grabbed a good writing ink pen and sat down at the table in the center of the room.

After a couple of sentences, the magic was restored and it was simply a matter of putting pen to paper.
