The $100 Hose

I’m of the opinion that plants don’t like to be alone. The two I have sitting on the rusted cart in my studio are so happy sitting side by side and even though they’re completely different, they enhance one another. They grow at a steady pace and I just finished repotting one of them for the third time.

We’re finally catching a break with the heat in Texas and this morning it was in the 60’s, so I spent 2 hours outside. I had just hung a garden hose on the hose caddy that I haven’t used this year. The hose was given to me by my daughter’s father when we first moved into this little house. Seven years ago, I couldn’t afford a hose of this quality. It’s commercial grade like a contractor would use and did well for the front yard, but it was a little much for the back, so I purchased a less expensive, lightweight hose.

I haven’t found anything more frustrating than walking across the yard with a hose full of running water toward my destination and the hose gets a kink in it. The kink is never nearby either, so I lay the hose down, walk to the kink, smooth it out and walk back to the hose which by now has made a nice mud hole. This is why we wear yard shoes.

All I wanted to do was refill the bird bath attached to the overhang of the gardening shed, but whenever I started walking toward it the hose would kink. I tried to remain calm, but after about the third time I found myself tugging on the hose in hopes of it flattening out on it’s own, which I knew it wouldn’t, until I let out a scream in frustration. The primal sound started the dogs, but it felt really good afterwards.

I paused and asked God, “What is this situation trying to teach me?”, and He said, “I have better in store.”

With a heavy heart, I glanced over at the better quality hose I had just stored. The little hose that I’d bought cost $50, so it was decent quality, but the hose given by my ex-husband was easily a $100 hose. My heart whispered, “Keep forgiving him, but most of all forgive yourself”, and use the $100 hose.

Plants friends with some propagation.

  1. Hoses make me crazy too. Dan finally told me to lay it out, before turning the water on and to shut the water off before trying to drag it back and hanging it on the hose holder. That saved me some aggravation this summer.

    1. It’s good to know I’m not alone in this, Anne! Yes, I leave it laying out flat and that seems to help. With the weather cooling off, thankfully everything doesn’t need watering everyday, so I placed a watering can outside to fill with the hose. That way the fight doesn’t even begin! 😂

      1. Perfect! I tore out most of our plants today so won’t be needing our hoses for a while either!

  2. Glad to hear some of the “kinks” are smoothing out and you’re finding peace. I thoroughly enjoy reading Marianne Williamson and her outlooks on spirituality, forgiveness, and love. Glad it’s cooling off down there – enjoy.😊❤️

    1. Aw Dwight and I love her writing too! I think my favorite book by her is, A Return to Love. It really opened my heart and mind to let myself love again. I’m so grateful it’s cooling off, but I’m sure it’s considered warm compared to where you are. Thank you for being supportive of my writing. It means a lot! 💖

  3. I bought a zero gravity hose several years ago when I didn’t even know what that was. I was looking for the type of hose that would shrink up when it was out of water and be lightweight, but I couldn’t find one. Anyway, thank you for a great reminder to ask spirit anytime we need something because there is always an answer. Keep up the good work.

    1. Hey Patty! I didn’t realize there was such a thing as a zero gravity hose, so I had to Google it! Usually when something’s not going my way, it’s time to pause and tap into that inner knowing. It’s there that I find some of life’s greatest surprises! Dragging this hose around it considered to be my workout for the day. 😂

  4. Thank you for the lesson. Sometimes the only person we hurt when we can’t forgive is ourselves. ❤️
