100 Walks

While living solo, I find it difficult to hold myself accountable to the intricate, daily habits that enhance my life. I’m still seeing Dr. Jason, so optimum health is at the forefront of my mind this year. During our July visit, my Bioenergetic readings were all good and he couldn’t find anything nutritionally my body was lacking, but it was still craving this one thing….exercise.

I’m active, but Dr. J, has been preaching that by body wants focused strength training. The first time he told me this was a few months ago, but in July he escorted me to the front desk with the same mini-lecture similar to….”Now Barbara…Your body is happy, but you have all of this unharnessed energy you’re not using! I want you to do strength training, 3 times a week for 30 minutes…..”, but that day, his words hit differently.

My next appointment with Dr. J., is in October, the day after my 62nd birthday and I didn’t want to hear the same speech again. It was time to commit.

I check-in on a couple of online Skool communities as a part of my paid work, but toward the end of July this one community popped up as a recommendation. It’s a walking community of women and I’m guessing it appeared from my online activity because my work has nothing to do with walking, or it was divine intervention.

The name of it drew me in, so I took a look at it and It’s called, “100 Walks” After reviewing some of the material being offered, I joined for one month and it was really good for me. I usually wait until summer has passed to walk, but this group was offering an August walking challenge and I love a good challenge.

The best time to go for a walk in Texas is right after daybreak, so 7am is optimal and I have gone as late as 8am, but no later, or it feels like walking the Sahara. Before I leave the house, I take a look at today’s walking challenge and it’s always something meaningful. When I return from my walk, I share it with the online community of women and this helps hold me accountable during this challenge.

For strength training I found some YouTube videos to follow and did my first one on August 3rd. I chose Monday, Wednesday and Friday for strength and can already tell a difference in my posture and how I carry myself when walking.

Completing 4 strength training videos may not sound like much, but for me it’s huge and II keep track by jotting it on my wall calendar, so at this writing it shows, 4S (strength), and 13W (walks).

Even though I’ve been walking this neighborhood for years, I’ve never counted each time I walked and there’s something about putting a number to it and watching that number increase over time that keeps me motivated. So, here’s my start of 100 walks.

  1. Love that you’re picking up what Dr. J is laying down when it comes to strength training. That’s huge, especially for women! And once you get your earbuds, I’ll do a walk & talk with you. 😎 Wellness for the Win💪

    1. Thank you, Dwight, but you’re an inspiration in this area as well! Yeah…Dr. J doesn’t ‘tell’ me what to do, but he will repeat himself in hopes of seeing a change. Hah! You have so much faith in my ability to walk and talk at the same time! They’re charging. 😎

  2. I think there’s something worth noticing in those marks on your calendar—4S and 13W. They may look like nothing more than letters and numbers to anyone else, but they’re evidence that intention has started becoming action. And that’s usually where change gets interesting.

We sometimes underestimate small beginnings because they don’t look very impressive while we’re standing in them. Four workouts aren’t fifty. Thirteen walks aren’t one hundred. But fifty never happens without four, and one hundred never happens without thirteen. Scripture asks, “For who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10). So apparently God has quite a different opinion of beginnings than we sometimes do.

Accountability is good too. I can look back at various times in my life when there’s been things I fully intended to do until I discovered that absolutely nobody would know if I didn’t do them. Suddenly tomorrow begins looking remarkably convenient. Having someone—or even a little community—expecting us to show up can give our good intentions somewhere to put their shoes on.

I happen to think there’s something wonderfully tangible about the old-fashioned wall calendar… watching those marks accumulate. Each one says, I showed up today. Not perfectly, not spectacularly, but faithfully.

Keep making those little marks, Barbara. One of these days you’re going to write 100W on that calendar.

    2. I really love what you shared, but especially here, “Four workouts aren’t fifty. Thirteen walks aren’t one hundred. But fifty never happens without four, and one hundred never happens without thirteen.” It all starts with one and it brings a smile to my face each time I update the number on the wall calendar. Thank you for your inspiring words and encouragement, lovely. 🧡

  3. My youngest, 19 year old has me strength training since June. His words, “I want you around here much longer.” Sweet words right?. Now it’s, “Mom what if you were in a burning house and needed to get something out your way. You couldn’t lift it. Come on 2 more. You sound like a kid.”

This mom, eye rolls and beams him with my invisible laser eye and gives him 2 more.

    Get it done!

    1. Ahhh….I love this immensely! Working on a ranch, I thought I’d always be strong. Unloading hay bales was my workout, but the ranch was connected to my marriage and he wouldn’t allow me to keep it, so time passes and we lose what we don’t use. We will get it done, and drink up the encouragement, my friend. 💖
