A New Day

The crashing thunder jolted me out of a deep sleep. It was 4am and I wasn’t expecting a storm, but it had definitely arrived and was making it’s presence known. I crawled out from under the covers, lifted my writing robe off it’s brass hook to slip it around me and went in search of Denver dog.

Denver is a big, white dog whom I fondly refer to as ’90 lbs. of chicken’. Normally, before we see the first bolt of lightning he comes in search of me. Dogs know a storm is coming long before it arrives, but this time I found him curled up behind one of the chairs in the den. This storm must have surprised him too, so he opted to hunker down somewhere safe instead of coming to my room, but here’s the thing. Denver knew I would find him and sit with him through the storm.

I poured a glass of water and sat at the wooden table nearby. Denver was stressed and his stomach was rumbling, but so was mine. I found myself saying some of the phrases I’ve spoken through every storm for reassurance, such as, “God gets us through every storm and He’s not going to change His mind during this one. We are going to trust Him because God doesn’t change.” (Malachi 3:6)

Earlier this week I was listening to a podcast where the teacher was talking about while we sleep a new day begins. No matter what we’re going through, at the end of the day we crawl into bed and go to sleep, but at 12:01 am, a new day begins. Now, as I gaze out the window during the hours I’m normally asleep, I couldn’t help but think… it may look dark, but actually…it’s a new day.

I have a big tri-color ’70 lbs. of chicken’ myself. 😂 Somehow, needing to shelter and protect his quivering heart always brings mine comfort — as did your words. What a beautiful post, Ms. Barb. 💕

    1. I agree completely. It calms me just knowing he needs me to be calm for him. Thank you lovely! 💖

  3. And that’s exactly why we don’t dwell on the past, too – it’s always a new day, a new hour, a new minute. Have you ever looked into a Thundershirt for Denver? Everyone I’d ever spoken to in the past when I was at the humane society said they were excellent.

    1. Tis true. I’ve heard of the shirt, but haven’t investigated thoroughly. Thank you for the reminder!

  4. Our “chicken” goes crazy, constantly barking, very upset. It is hard to watch, feeling kind of helpless. And, on the 4th of July, oh, oh my, it is hours of terribleness out here. A war zone for hours and hours. Been trying some calming remedies. I think maybe I need them more than Benny does.

    1. I’m sorry you have a chicken too, Gary and it is a helpless feeling. I’ve noticed the calmer I am, the calmer he becomes, so it’s like we support one another through it. There used to be a CBD shop nearby that swore by their calming dog treats and another blogger commented about a Thunder Vest. Ohhh…the fireworks are worse than thunder for Denver and they are already shooting them off here. Maybe we both need to sit down with a bag of edible CBD. 😂

      1. We’ve tried the edibles for Benny. Little help. You’re right, maybe we should eat some next time….I’m thinking of putting some headphones on him and playing some Enya. I’ll let you know if it wurkz.
