The dogs went wild, running and barking at the front door. I didn’t hear a sound while reading The Creative Cure, by Jacob Nordby and hadn’t realized it was after 10:00 am. The mail lady was dropping off my third and last pair of sneakers.
Of course, I’m still wearing my pajamas, fuzzy robe and pink, suede house boots, while snuggled up in a chair in my writing room reading and sipping my cup of Ryze. The dogs rambunctiousness jolted me out of my world and into theirs as I walked toward the front door to investigate the cause of excitement. I saw the mail lady leaving my front porch and walking along the pebble path toward her van parked by the arbor.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote her a thank you note, and enclosed a coffee gift card and placed it in the mailbox for her to find. I thanked her for always accepting me as I am and never judging me for retrieving the mail in my pajamas.
We’ve had full blown conversations in my front yard while wearing this cozy get up. She’s never said a word about how I look and treats me as if I’m dressed for the day, which some days I stick with the fuzzy robe and slippers until noon.
The day that she retrieved the note from the mailbox, she left me a note in return. You see, she’s almost to retirement age, but she’s sticking with the postal service to receive full benefits. I admire her tenacity because it’s not an easy job, especially during Christmas. In her note to me, she said she envied me always being in pajamas and couldn’t wait until retirement to wear her pajamas all day!
I stepped out onto the porch to grab the package she’d placed on the decorative, wrought iron table. She was already in her van, but when she saw me outside, she opened her door and got out to tell me this.
“I was off on Saturday and wore my pajamas all day!” She was so happy in that moment and I clapped my hands together, over my head, applauding her news. We celebrated together and stepping back inside I was happy for the mail lady. Continually seeing me in my pajamas had given her the permission she needed to wear pajamas all day.
